School principals in eligible rural and remote schools can submit a referral for individual students to be considered for a direct assessment and intervention service.
Students can be referred from the NSW Department of Education, Catholic Schools NSW and the Association of Independent Schools sectors. The referral is made in consultation with parents or carers.
Referrals for access to the service are prioritised according to the student’s level of reading difficulty and history of previous interventions.
The referral process
- Eligible schools receive information via email twice a year about the referral process (Terms 2 and 4).
- School staff complete an online application that includes evidence of systematic implementation of research-based literacy interventions.
- Local placement panels consider referrals.
- Schools are contacted regarding the outcome of the referral.
